The Silver Lake Speech Team competed at district speech on March 12 at Grand Island Central Catholic. Eight schools participated in their district this year. It was a busy day for the team since GICC also hosted two other district competitions. Each speech event competed in two rounds and those who qualified moved on to the next round. Over half of the team made it to finals and placed at districts. Senior Morgan Dinkler commented, “When we first got there it was a little intimidating, but as the day went on, we knew that we put in just as much work as the other teams, and we gained confidence throughout the day.”
Through a long day of competition, the speech team had a good day. Placing at districts were junior, Emma Strampher – 4th Humorous, and junior, Katelyn Strampher – 5th Extemporaneous. The students moving on to compete at state include the following: 1st senior Sydney Bartels in Persuasive, and K. Strampher and E. Strampher in duet; 2nd senior Maddie Karr and senior Taylor Hanson in duet, and 3rd senior Savanna Junek, Bartels, Dinkler, junior Milla Butler, and junior Sophie Butler in Oral Interpretation of Drama. Coach Schmidt commented, “I am so proud of how the team this season has grown and all the hard work they have put into everything.” Coach Schmidt and Hemberger are excited to see how they will perform at state. State speech is on March 22 at Kearney High School.
