Last week, the Junior High, High School, and elementary Quiz Bowl teams competed in the ESU 9 meet in Hastings. The Junior High team went 1-2, beating Doniphan Trumball but losing to Red Cloud and Adams Central. The High School team went 0-2, losing to Adams Central and Blue Hill. Coach Knehans says, “Both teams competed very well and every loss was only by one score.” Senior Samantha Bonifas says, “ESU 9 is always a fun meet. Every year it is always a challenge. I really enjoyed this season with everyone and I have had a lot of fun.” Seventh Grader Libby Soucek says, “We competed very well at the ESU 9 quiz bowl meet. We are excited to see how our team grows in the future years to come.” On Tuesday, February 7th the Silver Lake Elementary Quiz Bowl Team traveled to Hastings to compete in the ESU 9 Quiz Bowl Meet. Forty-six teams and approximately 480 kids participated in their largest meet to date. The Silver Lake team consisted of sixth grade students Graham Karr, Blaise Kushen, and Devin Maudlin. Fifth graders on the team were Leah Bartels, Mazie Boyd, Emily Hemberger, Colston Karr, and Olivia Whitten. The team started out strong with a 45-5 win over Hawthorne. They continued to win two more close matches. In their final two matches, they battled hard and pulled out all the stops even using a challenge to help battle their way back, but they just fell short. The team worked well together by knowing each other’s strengths. The team placed in the top five.
