On Tuesday, February 14, the Mustang girls took on one of their rivals, the Blue Hill Bobcats, for sub-districts. After a tough loss to the Meridian Mustangs to end their regular season, the Silver Lake Mustangs were determined to come out and prove themselves on the court against the Bobcats. Coming out strong in the first quarter, the Mustangs trailed closely behind with a 1-point difference, the score tallying to 4-5. Losing their momentum from the first quarter in the next three quarters, the Mustangs fell short to the Bobcats, and the final three quarters ended 6-17, 8-14, and 3-11, respectively. Sub-districts ended in the Bobcats’ favor, concluding the 21-47 point game. Leading scorers for the Mustangs included freshman Sophie Schmidt and sophomore Katy Soucek, with 8 and 9 points, respectively. Other contributors to the Mustang cause were Sophie Schmidt and freshman Makenna Karr, with 5 and 6 defensive rebounds. Also picking up on the offensive side include Karr and sophomore Emma Schmidt, with 3 offensive rebounds each. Commenting on how the Mustangs ended their season, head coach Kate Sinsel states, “In the sub-district game, we struggled to get the ball to go through the hoop. At times, we ran our offense really well, but we just couldn’t finish with a bucket. Blue Hill shot exceptionally well that night, hitting 8 threes. That was the difference in the game.” She continued by discussing the season as a whole: “This season was one that I will always cherish. This group of girls was hardworking and dedicated; every single day in the gym, whether it was practice or a game, was a day they took to get better. I am proud of them for the victories and successes, and even more proud of them for how they handled the losses and setbacks. They are a tremendous group of young ladies, and I am extremely grateful that I was able to coach them.”
