On Friday, September 27, the Mustangs headed to Sterling for their second away game of the season. Seniors Lane and Casey Conway led the Mustangs’ offense. Lane had 176 total yards, 2 touchdowns, and 97 rushing yards. In only seven carries, Casey earned 139 yards total and 3 touchdowns. Junior Jaxon tenBensel racked up 9 carries for 29 yards. Defensively, multiple players contributed to the team’s 56 tackles. Casey Conway led the way with 11. Senior Paxton Sorensen and sophomore Xander Journey added 6 a piece. Beating the Jets 42-6 bumped the Mustang’s record to 3-1. The coaches were able to get some key playing time for the junior varsity players. Coach Brown said, “Being able to put more younger players builds depth and gets guys more playing experience. It also allows us to give players a break. Having so many players able to contribute to a varsity team allows us to have multiple personnel groups. This helps us be unpredictable and allows us to play our team’s strength.” Coach Brown discussed what they focused on for the second half of the season during the bye week: “We focused on fundamentals, blocking, tackling, and situational awareness. Conditioning was also a priority to stay sharp for the second half of the season.”
Brown had a few shoutouts for the players that stood out to him. He stated, “I have to give a shoutout to our offensive line. They did a tremendous blocking creating running lanes for the ball carriers. They played their best game so far. Lane and Casey Conway also had a great game. They both did an outstanding job of setting the tone early with some big hits and big runs to help create momentum that would last the whole game .”
