Mustangs Trample the Wolves

By Xander Journey

On September 8th, 2023, the Silver Lake Mustangs left school early to play the Maywood-Hayes Center Wolves. This was the Mustangs’ third game where they were prepared and ready for the opportunity to win another game. The Mustangs came out strong with a first-quarter score of 6-0. The Mustang team warmed up in the second quarter making the score 22-6 going into halftime.  “The offense ran the ball very well,” said head coach Connor Brown. Senior Keaton Karr led the offense, contributing four touchdowns and 184 rushing yards. Junior Lane Conway also scored a touchdown and added 112 rushing yards and 33 passing yards. Going into the second half, the Mustangs didn’t find their offensive tempo, remaining scoreless for the third quarter. However, the fourth quarter proved successful, with two touchdowns finishing the game. They only allowed the Wolves to put up one touchdown for each quarter of the second half, for a final score of 36-21. Brown was pleased with his team’s defense: “I thought our defense played fast and did a good job of making open field tackles. Our defensive line and linebackers did a great job defending.” The defensive burden was shared between many Mustang players. Karr had eight tackles, while senior Jack Sorensen, junior Casey Conway, and sophomore Landon Duester each contributed six. Karr also picked off a Wolves pass for an interception. The Mustangs improved their record to 2-1.
