On Thursday, March 16, the Mustang track team traveled to the University of Nebraska Kearney to compete in their first meet of the season. Though the Mustangs were challenged with an indoor track, something they’re not very familiar with, they overcame this obstacle and brought home multiple medals. Bringing it home in running events, the team earned five medals.
Both the 4×400 meter relay, consisting of senior Georgi tenBensel, sophomore Katy Soucek, and freshmen Sophie Schmidt and Makenna Karr, and the 4×800 relay, consisting of tenBensel, junior Morgan Dinkler, and sophomores Milla and Sophie Butler, placed fourth. Showing their roles as freshmen, Karr earned third place in the 55-meter dash and fourth place in the 200-meter dash. Schmidt also medaled in the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, placing second in both events. Dinkler placed in the 800-meter dash, receiving sixth place. Also bringing in placings for the Mustangs were team members competing in field events. Representing the team in girls’ shot put were Soucek and sophomore McKenna Pankoke, placing first and third, respectively. Also, placing first in boys’ shot put was junior Adrian Gomez. Acquiring two placings in long jump were Schmidt and Karr, placing first and sixth, respectively. After a successful first meet that brought home many medals, Coach Conroy comments, “I was very happy with how well the team performed at UNK. They did not keep team scores, but if they had we would have done very well with our overall team scores for both boys and girls. It was a great start to our season and now we need to keep improving.” Come support the Mustangs as they take on their second meet on Friday, March 24 in Wilcox.
