Mustangs Face Off With the Falcons

By Addison Schmidt

The Silver Lake Lady Mustangs took on the Wilcox-Hildreth Falcons in an afternoon of volleyball at Wilcox on October 6. The Junior varsity started off the night by winning the first set 25-11. In the next set, the C team came out with high intensity. Even though it was a hard-fought set, the final score was 24-26. The Mustangs had to pull out to play another set with a final score of 15-8 pulling out a win. Coach tenBensel said, “I thought the first set we came out a little off; I think mainly due to having new players in spots! After the first set; everyone settled down, started communicating more, and playing better defense; then we were right there with them the entire time! Our offense really stepped it up after set one as well and that is something that I hope carries on with those girls; staying aggressive at the net at all times!” Varsity came out with a strong hope to follow the winning lead of the JV. Even though they played hard, the Falcons won the first set 23-25. The varsity started the second set off strong. While it was a struggle, the Lady Mustangs took the win in the second set 23-25. The third set of the night the girls come out determined to play hard. The Lady Mustangs won with a final score of 25-16. The girls had a hard-fought night but lost the fourth set with a score of 23- 25. Sophomore Katy Soucek has 19 kills with a 37.3 kill percentage. Freshman Sophie Schmidt had 39 digs out of the team’s 109.

Senior Brooklyn Meyer had 18 serve receptions. Senior Georgi tenBensel was out due to an injury. Soucek says, “We had to adapt to some new changes, but overall I think that we played a good game. All the hitters got really good hits that night, which came from the good sets and that came from the good passes up to the setters.” Saturday, October 15, is TVC at Kenesaw, with Silver Lake playing Blue Hill in the first round. October 18 is Silver Lake volleyball invite with Friend, Axtell, and Deshler, with Silver Lake playing Friend first. October 24 and 25 is volleyball Sub-Districts.
