Mustangs face Dragons in Season Opener

By: Marissa Erickson

On Friday, December 4, the Lady Mustang basketball teams competed against the Deshler dragons in their season opener. The Lady Mustangs beat the Lady Dragons 44 to 38. In the first quarter, the Mustangs got out to a hot start; however, they went on a short scoring drought, leaving the Dragons ahead by 1. In the second quarter, the Dragons managed to pull away by 6 going into the half. However, with the help from 15 points from junior Katelyn Karr, the second half was all Mustangs. Silver Lake outscored the Dragons by 6 in both the third and fourth quarter, managing to pull ahead by 6 to finish the match. The Mustangs found success from behind the arc, knocking down 5 of the 10 three pointers put up. Sophomore Georgi tenBensel grabbed 8 defensive rebounds, and junior Amanda Ehrman added six assists to aid the Mustang offense. Defensively, the Mustangs picked off 14 passes, with tenBensel and Ehrman grabbing 4 each.

The Mustang men took the floor following the Lady Mustangs. Silver Lake showed up to play, gaining a 6 point lead at the end of the first quarter. However, following the 15 point quarter, the Mustangs only managed to put up six points in the next quarter, leaving the Mustangs trailing by only 3 going into the break. Coming out of the half, Deshler stayed consistent with their scoring, putting up 28 points in the second half. The Mustangs ended the game with 38 points, falling to Deshler with 52. With the help of 3 three-pointers, junior Oakley Rosno led the team with 17 points. Senior Blaine Simonton added his own 8 and senior Logan Greenough contributed 5. The Mustangs remained steady from behind the foul line, shooting 75%. Senior Matthew Hansen also helped the Mustangs by pulling down 8 boards, and Rosno led the team with 4 assists and 4 steals. The Mustangs forced 18 Dragon turnovers.
