On February 19, the Lady Mustangs prepared to play in their first sub-district game of the season. Each player and coach knew how much dedication had been put into this season and got the opportunity to host sub-districts, so they were confident going in against the Harvard Cardinals. Junior Makenna Karr led the Mustangs in total points, scoring 16 points overall. Karr comments on her mindset going into their first round of sub districts: “We were all excited when we found out that we were hosting because of the fact that we haven’t yet lost at home. Playing on our home court and never having lost to Harvard gave us a confidence booster going into subs.” The Mustangs ended the first quarter in the lead with a score of 19-3. They continued the trend going into halftime with a lead of 38-5. Trailing behind Karr in points was junior Sophie Schmidt. Schmidt put away 9 points in order to help lead the Mustangs to a hopeful victory. She also majorly contributed in rebounds, leading her team with 9. Senior Emma Schmidt trailed behind Schmidt, contributing 7 points for the Silver Lake Mustangs. Karr also helped out her team in rebounds, contributing 6. Seniors Macy Parr, Paige Faimon, and Katy Soucek also picked up 4 rebounds. The Mustangs continued to widen the score throughout the whole game. They maintained the lead for the entirety of the game and by the end of the fourth quarter, the Mustangs finished with an ending score of 55-13.
The next day, the Mustangs were ready to take on Lawrence Nelson. Going into the game on February 20th knowing the Raiders have fallen short to the Mustangs twice this season, the girls were ready. Coach Sinsel comments, “It’s never easy to play the same team three times, especially in the span of a couple weeks. We knew we needed to bring our A-game, especially after their great win the night before against Meridian.” The top scorers of the game included Juniors Makenna Karr and Sophie Schmidt and senior Katy Soucek with 17, 13, and 8 points, respectively. Karr and Schmidt also led the Mustangs in rebounds, each contributing 5, helping lead Silver Lake to a potential victory. By the end of the fourth quarter, the Mustangs created over a 20-point gap, the scoreboard tallying 54-27, qualifying the Mustangs for the district final basketball game.
