Coming off on a tough loss against Deshler, the Lady Mustangs basketball team hosted their third game of the season against the Axtell Wildcats on Tuesday, December 6th. The final score ended up 42-28, with the Mustangs ending the game on top. The Mustangs held a strong lead in the first two quarters, those scores tallying 8-12 and 6-10. With the Wildcats fighting hard in the next quarter, the score for the third quarter ended up 9-9. Even with a tied third quarter, the Mustangs did not back down, ending the fourth quarter with a score of 5-11. The top offenders against the Wildcats were sophomore Emma Schmidt and freshman Sophie Schmidt, scoring 9 and 7 points. Also, a top contributor in the offense was senior Samantha Bonifas, acquiring 4 offensive rebounds. Putting up the most defensive rebounds was senior Georgi tenBensel, with a total of 4. Another defensive leader was senior Brooklyn Meyer, acquiring the most steals. With the Mustangs improving their record to 1-2 after a hard-fought win against the Wildcats, Bonifas is appreciative of all the work the team has put in, saying “This team is special. We have an amazing connection and it finally showed on the court versus Axtell. We played well
physically and mentally, and I am very proud of the team for that.”
Facing the Elba Bluejays on Friday, December 9, the Mustangs finished the game on top with a final score of 57-15. Acquiring the most points against the Bluejays were tenBensel, Meyer, and sophomore Katy Soucek, scoring 20, 9, and 8 points, respectively. Also contributing the most rebounds were Meyer and tenBensel. Top defenders against Elba included Soucek, tenBensel, and Sophie Schmidt, with 5, 4, and 3 steals. Coming off the last two games with two wins, the Mustangs are eager to take on their next opponents. They will face the Kenesaw Blue Devils on Friday, December 16.
