The Silver Lake Lady Mustangs hosted their annual volleyball invite on October 18. Attending the tournament this year were the Deshler Dragons, the Friend Bulldogs, and the Axtell Wildcats. Starting off strong, the Mustangs took down the Bulldogs in two sets. Leading the Mustang’s defense, freshman Sophie Schmidt picked up 12 digs while senior Lexi Wengler gained a block in the front row. Switching it up on offense, junior Morgan Dinkler put up 10 assists while the hitters put down a total of 31 kills. Senior Josi Sharp said she thought “we stayed focused the entirety of the game, focusing on what we needed to do: play our level of game.” Continuing the excitement from the Mustang win, the players and fans celebrated Senior Night. Silver Lake’s six volleyball seniors were recognized along with their parents: Josi Sharp, Samantha Bonifas, Marissa Erickson, Brooklyn Meyer, Lexi Wengler, and Georgi tenBensel. Senior Night is always an emotional night for the team and this year was no different. “It was on our minds the whole night that this would be our last time playing on our home court. It was bittersweet but we gave our all and left our hearts on the court,” commented Sharp. Continuing into the championship game, the Lady Mustangs took on the Wildcats. The ladies had a good start but got down in a slump toward the middle of the set. The team fought back hard at the end but it wasn’t quite enough to pull off the win. Nevertheless, the team worked until the end, racking up 37 serve receives and 40 digs. Sharp said she was really proud of how the team continued to celebrate every point and never gave up, even though the team was down. The Lady Mustangs will travel to St. Cecilia in Hastings this week for Sub-Districts.
