Putting up a good fight, the Silver Lake Mustangs were defeated in three sets by the Shelton Bulldogs. The Mustangs fell short in the first set, concluding it with a final score of 25-3. The second set tallied to a 25-16 point match, and the third set ended 25-12. Leading the team in kills was senior Georgi tenBensel, contributing a total of 10 points in attacking. Sophomore Katy Soucek dominated in defense, achieving two blocks against Shelton’s tough offense. Excelling in the back row were Soucek, and seniors Lexi Wengler and tenBensel, digging up 4, 7, and 10 hits. Head varsity coach, Jenn tenBensel said, “As a whole team; we came out on the day flat; it seemed to take both JV and Varsity girls a while to get adjusted and start playing! We knew coming into the game that Shelton’s Varsity is extremely good! Our defense had their work cut out for them but once we got settled down, we were able to adjust a bit and started rallying with them! I told them that after the game I was happy to see girls pick each other up and stay together as a team! That aspect was just as important as a win right now! There’s a chance we will see them again in the conference tourney; we will keep working together and will be ready!” Come support the Mustangs on parent’s night on September 13 as they face the Red Cloud Warriors.
