The Silver Lake 2021-22 basketball season has officially begun! The Mustangs kicked off their regular season with a game against Red Cloud on Thursday night. The JV girls started off the night strong with a win. Freshman Emma Schmidt and sophomore Lana Swanson each had 5 points to help with the win. There wasn’t a JV boys game, so the varsity Lady Mustangs took the floor and the first quarter ended with the score of 13-4, the Mustangs with the lead. The girls scored 22 points in the second quarter, leaving the first half with a score of 35-12. Silver Lake came out after halftime just as strong as they started the game and took the win with a final score of 47-26. Senior Katelyn Karr thought it went well, saying, “We couldn’t go in cocky and thinking it was going to be an easy win because they always bring a good defense.” Katelyn led the team with 20 points. Freshman Katy Soucek was a leader in rebounding with 5 and senior Amanda Ehrman and Karr followed with 4.
Silver Lake went into their games against Deshler the next day with confidence and encouragement from their previous wins. JV girls started off the night and battled hard but couldn’t pull off the win. The score of the first half was 10-6. They came out after halftime fighting and scored 11 points, while Deshler scored 6. It wasn’t enough though and the game ended with a final score of 26-17. The varsity Lady Mustangs played a tough game and worked hard to pull off a 30-25 win. Junior Georgi TenBensel went to the boards with 9 points followed shortly after by Ehrman with 8. Karr helped out with 4 free throws. Karr and Ehrman did a huge part to secure the win, both with 6 rebounds. The girls did a tremendous job and fought hard to the end.
