The Silver Lake Junior High Girls Basketball team woke up early on Saturday, December 11 to travel to Kenesaw for their annual basketball tournament. Taking on Harvard in their first match of the day, the Mustang’s defense managed to hold the Cardinals to just five points in the first half. However, the Mustangs also struggled to put some points on the board in the first half, with 8th grader Sophie Schmidt managing to put up all of the team’s seven points. In the third quarter, the Mustangs were able to put up seven points to the Cardinal’s three, to pull ahead 14-8. The Cardinals put up a good fight in the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs were able to hang on to finish the game 16-14. Schmidt contributed 14 points with 8th grader Kamille Karr adding two.
Next, the Lady Mustangs took on Kenesaw, where their defense managed to hold the Blue Devils to just seven points in the match. The Mustangs pulled ahead quickly, outscoring their opponent seven to three in the first half. They then went on a 15-4 scoring run in the second half to win the tournament. The girls found success behind the free-throw line, shooting 80%. Schmidt led the offense again with 19 points, with 8th grader Karah Bartels contributing two points and Karr adding 1. The Mustangs will face Kenesaw again on December 17 for their last game of the season.
