With the conference tournament just weeks away, the stakes were high as the Mustangs took on a conference rival, the Franklin Flyers on January 19. The first quarter was a slow start for the Mustangs, and shots were not falling. The Lady Mustangs trailed the Flyers by 3 but were able to hold them to 6 points. Silver Lake was able to pick it up in the second quarter scoring an additional 12 points to their three and the Flyers were only able to score 7 points in addition to their 6. The score was 13 to 15 at the half, with the score in favor of the Lady Mustangs. Head coach Keith Crowe commented, “I think the game was very exciting. The girls worked hard to pull off the win, and I’m very proud of how they held their composure.” Heading into the third quarter, after a close first half, the Flyers and Mustangs were in a dog fight. With back to back scoring all quarter, both the Lady Flyers and Mustangs both contributed 11 points to their score. The fourth quarter was a nail biter with the Flyers scoring 14 points to the Mustangs 16. Georgi tenBensel was put on the line three times with a lot of pressure to untie the game. The girls pulled through and took the W 38-42. Senior, Kerigan Karr, led the team with 14 points followed by junior, Katelyn Karr with 8 points. Adding to tenBensel’s free throw pressure, she contributed 9 points to the Mustang scoreboard.
To finish off the night the Mustang Men took on the 2-8 Franklin Flyers. The Flyers showed promise in the first quarter putting up 17 points to the Mustangs 16 points. In the second quarter, Franklin couldn’t keep up with Silver Lake, and at the half, the score was in favor of the Mustangs being 25-31. Coming out of halftime, feeling fresh, the Mustangs came out and scored another 24 points stretching the lead on Franklin, who only scored 8. In the final quarter, Silver Lake outscored the Flyers yet again, by 6 points with the final score being 38-66. The Mustang’s lead scorer was Oakley Rosno with 25 points which also put him as the player of the game. Blaine Simonton and Matthew Hansen each contributed 11 points for the Mustangs.
