Homecoming is one of the most celebrated weeks in the country. This year, the classes competed against one another to see who had the best-decorated hallway. The seniors’ theme was Haunted House, the juniors’ was Juvenile Juniors, the sophomores’ was The Wild West, the freshmen’s was The Circus, and the junior high’s was Candy Land. Also with the fun of decorating the hallways, students competed to see who was the best dressed. Monday was American Day, Tuesday was Hawaiian, Wednesday was Teacher /Admin Day, and Thursday was Color War. At the high school, Seniors dressed in black, Juniors wore white, Sophomores repped red, Freshmen adorned blue, 8th grade rocked pink, 7th grade put on green, and staff donned orange. The following colors were worn at the elementary: Preschool- orange, Kindergarten-blue, 1st-grade-pink, 2nd-grade- green, 3rd-grade- black, 4th-grade- white, 5th-grade-red, 6th-grade-purple, and staff-grey. Finally, Friday was Spirit Day.
On Tuesday, the senior class took part of the day to make posters to bring to every community and paint people’s cars. The week started with the volleyball team playing in a quad on Tuesday winning against Elba and Wilcox-Hildreth for their pink night. The Mustangs won both matches. Then finally Friday came around and everybody was excited for the football and volleyball games that evening. This year, the pep rally took place in Bladen on the football field. The pep rally started with everyone getting involved in the Mustang Power cheer. Then the candidates were introduced on their golf carts and each set had its own theme. Casey Conway and Sophie Butler’s theme was Huskers and they came out to the tunnel walk song. Lane Conway and Paige Faimon’s theme was American and they came out to the song “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus. Clay Plambeck and McKenna Pankoke’s theme was Cop and Robber with Pankoke chasing Plambeck with their golf cart and they came out to the song “Bad Boys” by Inner Circle. Finally, Cody Plambeck and Emma Schmidt’s theme was Gold Diggers and they came out to the “Gold Digger” by Kanye West and Jamie Foxx. After all the candidates parked their golf carts they competed in a relay race the first part was the boys putting on tutus, crop tops, sandals, necklaces, and purses. Then the girls had to do a balloon waddle. They had to go down with a balloon between their legs without dropping it and then they had to run back. Then, the boys had to balance an egg on a spoon walk to one end, and then run back to their partner. Afterward, the girls had to hop in a sack down and run back. Once the girls got back, both partners had to do a three-legged boot scramble. The winners were Casey Conway and Butler. Once the student council got everything cleaned up after the relay race they set everything up for musical chairs. Out of 23 students and staff sophomore Xander Journey was the winner. Volleyball team captains, football team captains, and the high school cross country team all competed against each other in a game of charades where each coach from each team had to act something out. The winning team was volleyball with six points, second place was football with five points, and then cross country with 2 points.
After the pep rally was over, the volleyball team headed into the school to get ready for their game. To start the night off the volleyball team won in three sets. Afterward, everyone made their way outside to the football field to watch the football game. The football game had a running clock by the third quarter with the boys winning 49-0. Following the football game was the crowing of our king and queen. This year’s king and queen were Cody Plambeck and Paige Faimon. After the crowing, all the kids headed inside for pizza and the dance. October 4th was an all-around good night for Silver Lake Mustang’s community with wins all around.
